Abstract : The Methanol and Ethyl acetate leaf extracts of Syzygium tamilnadensis, Syzygium densiflorum and Eugenia
candolleana showed significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, E.coli, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella
pneumoniae and Enterococcus faecalis and antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus
flavus and Trichoderma sp. at various concentrations ranging from (1.25, 2.5, 5mg/mL) by using agar well diffusion and
Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). All the extracts showed various levels of activity on different test organisms.
E.coli showed good zone of inhibition for methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of Syzygium densiflorum at 5.0mg/mL
concentrations with 26 and 27mm. Whereas, fungal pathogens like Candida albicans showed good zone of inhibition for
methanolic extracts of Syzygium densiflorum with 28mm at 5.0mg/mL concentration and Trichoderma sp. showed good
inhibition for ethyl acetate extracts of Eugenia candolleana at 5.0mg/mL recorded with 25mm. All the plants showed good
results at 5.0mg/mL concentration, as the concentration increased the zone of inhibition gradually increased. The minimum
inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extracts for bacterial strains ranges from 250μg/μL to1000μg/μL and for fungal strains
it ranged from 120μg/μL to250 μg/μL. The results obtained suggest that Syzygium tamilnadensis, Syzygium densiflorum
and Eugenia candolleana can be used in treating diseases caused by the test organisms.
