Abstract : As the epidermis adapts to different environments, the desquamation of keratinocytes is affected by the water
content of the epidermis. The thickness of the stratum corneum is determined by the interaction between exfoliation and
water content. The balance between these processes is the key to healthy skin. In this study, a numerical model of stratum
corneum thickness was constructed based on the interaction between exfoliation and water content. In this model, free water
on the skin surface is removed, and skin homeostasis is expressed by focusing on the differences in the amount of bound
water. This numerical simulation presents that when the skin is dry, keratin tends to increase because of the regulation
mechanism; however, when the skin is too dry, the accumulated keratin clumps up and easily peels off.
