Abstract : Abstract - Demand for renewable energy such as biomass is increasing as interest in the use of renewable energy to replace fossil fuels increases due to the increase in energy demand around the world. Biomass is recognized as a 'carbon neutral' energy in the international community that regulates CO2 emission by emitting significantly less pollutants compared to other energies. In particular, by using waste biomass (waste wood, bagasse, etc.) that is being thrown away as energy, not only electricity production but also waste treatment can be done, so the development of fuel using biomass in Southeast Asia is in the spotlight. Among them, torrefaction technology is a technology that can increase the heating value of biomass and optimize energy efficiency. In this study, torrefaction experiments were performed under various operating conditions using bagasse (average 3.35mm-length) made from Vietnamese sugarcane in a fixed bed reactor (ID = 47.6 mm, height = 500 mm). The optimum operating conditions for torrefaction were investigated by changing various reaction temperatures (220-280°C) and residence time (20-50min) in an inert atmosphere. Performance indicators were evaluated by the measured mass and energy yields, and industrial and elemental analysis. The results of this study will be used as basic data for determining the commercial operating conditions for bagasse torrefaction and understanding the characteristics of torrefaction in the future. Keywords - Torrefaction, Bagasse, Fuel characterization, Heating value, Biomass.
