Abstract : Athletic performance is result of a complex interplay of multiple factors, including genetic predisposition, deliberate practice, diet, metabolism and others. Recently, neural and cognitive processes were highlighted to contribute to athletic performance. We used the results of a previously published genome-wide association study (GWAS) to determine whether there may be common DNA variants to endurance athletes in genes that may have a role in neural processes. A closer look on previously published data from Rankinen et al. (2016) showed that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) common to endurance athletes have a weak link to nervous system function. We identified only one SNP in a gene linked to nervous system function, ADRA1A that is thought to play a role in stress and reward systems. The link between DNA variants common to endurance athletes and nervous system remains yet to be determined using studies with a larger sample size.
