Article Citation :Chrowkhurshid ,Munaabubaker , (2019 ) " In Vitro Cytotoxicity of Bioactive Compounds Isolated from Whelk on Cancer and Malaria " , International Journal of Advances in Science, Engineering and Technology(IJASEAT) , pp. 42-49, Volume-7,Issue-2, Special. Iss-2

Abstract : One alternative to the currently available drugs is the active molecules in natural products. This study examines the activity of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) from whelk on five cancer cell lines, mammosphere from +ER and –ER breast cancer and malaria parasite. The active compounds with significant IC50 ≤ 10 μg/mL have been isolated, and their composition analysis has been published in a previous study. These GAGs contain highly sulphated polysaccharides, and heparin sulphate is the primary target in the search for the bioactive components within the whelk GAG. MTT assay and fluorescence-based drug susceptibility assay were used to measure the toxicity. The IC50 values were significant (A549 = 2.40 μg/mL; MCF-7 = 3.20 μg/mL; SKBR3 = 2.50 μg/mL; HepG2 0.80 μg/mL; K562 = 5.30 μg/mL; 12μg/mL and 9μg/mL from malaria after 48 and 72 hours of incubation, respectively). This suggests that whelk GAG-like polysaccharides might contribute to the development of anticancer and antimalarial agents. Keywords - Whelk Glycosaminoglycans, MTT, Mammosphere Assay, Antimalarial, Anticancer.
