Abstract : The aim of our study was to evaluate the influence of ammonium vanadate (NH4VO3) on the growth of transplantable hepatoma of Zajdela in rats. NH4VO3 was dissolved in the drinking water at a concentration of 0.5 ppm and given ad libitum. Four to five week old inbred Wistar male rats were divided into four groups as follows: A (Control) - No implantation of tumor cells, no treatment with NH4VO3; B - No implantation of tumor cells, 70 days treatment with NH4VO3; Group C - Implantation of tumor cells, no treatment with NH4VO3; Group D - Treatment with NH4VO3 began 40 days before the implantation of tumor cells and continued until the end of the experiment (70 days). It was found that the addition of NH4VO3 in the drinking water resulted in cancer cell lysis and decreased tumor volumes by 91 % (P < 0.05) and weight by 82% (P < 0.05) in animals from group D as compared to the group C.
