Abstract : Aluminium recycling industry is a business activity that produce pure aluminium metal from aluminium waste.
Although these industries are reducing the amount of aluminium waste, they still produce some waste that categorized as
hazardous if not managed properly. Unfortunately, these current growing industries in Jombang district, East Java, Indonesia
usually discharge its waste directly to the environment. This case leads to several health and environmental problem for
surrounding habitant. Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly solution to treat metal contamination in soil. Scirpus grossus is
widely known to have good ability for being a metal remediating agent in phytoremediation. Before applying this technique,
a toxicity test need to be carried out to analyze the maximum concentration that can be treated using this method. Toxicity
test was carried out by using Range Finding Test (RFT) method for 14 days. RFT was conducted by planting Scirpus grossus
in plastic reactor containing aluminium contaminated soil with several concentrations made from 50 mg/kg stock.
Contaminated soil was made by using spiked soil method with 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0% concentration of aluminium
diluted with tap water. Physical parameter i.e. plant height, leaves color and sprout growth were observed during the test
period. Result showed that Scirpus grossus was able to live in 100% equal to 50 mg/kg aluminium during observation
period.
