Abstract : Dyeing chemicals are vastly used in dyeing industry, and wastewater from dyeing industry results in high
concentration chemical oxygen demand and biochemical oxygen demand. This study employed adsorption tests of various
carbon materials with specific functional groups (NO2 and COOH) to eliminate a commercial dyeing (Reactive Blue 4)
solution. Single-walled carbon nanotube, multi-walled carbon nanotube, and activated carbon were used to adsorb the dyeing
solution. Moreover, carbon materials leached with HNO3and a carboxylic acid under a thermal activated process to
attachNO2 and COOH groups on carbon materials, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to
depict the types of functional groups attached on carbon materials. Adsorption tests were conducted sequentially after carbon
materials attached with functional groups. Most carbon materials presented high adsorption ability, and adsorption capacities
of SWCNT with NO2, SWCNT with COOH, MWCNT with NO2, MWCNT with COOH, activated carbon with NO2, and
activated carbon are 55.7%, 75.7%, 50%, 52.9%, 67.1%, and 97.1%, respectively. As a result, activated carbon was the most
suitable carbon materials for dyeing adsorption.
