Abstract : Most medicinal plants have not been thoroughly evaluated for their Hypotensve profiles; Hence, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, is one of such plants. The antihypertensive effects of methanol extract of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, was evaluated in salt induced hypertensive rats using 8% salt. Blood pressure was monitored using Ugo Basile Blood Pressure Recorder. A total of 36 albino rats were used and were divided into six (6) groups of six (6) rats. Control group received distilled water orally 5 ml/day. Second group was induced but not treated. Groups (3-5) received doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/ kg/ day of the extracts for 8-days while group 6 received 10 mg/ kg/ day of the Captopril drug. The results indicated that the 200mg/kg of methanol extracts of these plants showed appreciable antihypertensive activity in treated rats when compared to control group. The 200mg/kg of methanol extract of E.camaldulensis reduced the mean arterial pressure from110.30 .13 to 94.33 .41 respectively. The systolic and diastolic were reduced from 140 1.22 to 126 0.95 and 95 0.51 to 79 1.01 respectively. The pulse rate was reduced from 303 3.12 to 250 3.87. The reference drug (Captopril), and 200mg/kg of E. camaldulensis were found to show significant (P<0.05). The result suggests that the extracts of E. camaldulensis, possessed antihypertensive properties. Keywords - Medicinal plants, Rats, Antihypertensive, Salt and Captopil.
