Tribological Parameters Analysis of Cam Follower Pair with using Different Concentration of Anti-Wear Additives in Lubricants

Abstract
Most of the frictional losses in an internal combustion engine come from three major components e.g. bearings, piston assembly and valve train etc. The frictional losses from the valve train were generally lower than piston assembly and engine bearings, but at low engine speeds the importance is much greater. Engine performance was influenced by cam follower through surface characteristics. Tribological parameters significantly effects the surface characteristics of cam follower. In terms of wear and subsequently consistency and strength problems, the cam follower is proved to be most difficult to design and lubricate effectively. Effective lubrication with proper choice and different concentration of lubricants additives can affect the surface topography of cam follower. Anti-wear additives have found wide scope in industrial applications due to their overall stability. Additives containing zinc, phosphorus and sulphur is extremely useful in lubrication as an anti-wear additive. In this paper, use of zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates(ZDDP) as anti-wear additives is studied. The experimentswas done on pin-on-disc tribometer. The effects of addition of a different amount of ZDDP in Poly-alpha-olefin (synthetic oil- PAO) oil on the frictional force, wear and coefficient of frictionat different temperature were studied. From the experimentation, it is observedthat at room temperature theaddition of 15 % ZDDP to synthetic engine oil showed better performancein reduction of wear, friction force and coefficient of friction than other concentration of ZDDP. From experimentation, it is also noted that at elevated temperature 20% ZDDP concentration with base oil shows minimum frictional losses Keywords - anti-wear additives, PAO, tribological parameters, ZDDP.
