Abstract : Background and aim: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease with involvement of multiple organs and the production of auto antibodies against different components of the cell. Chronic stresses during lifetime lead to physical and mental impacts and subsequently decrease quality of life (QoL) in SLE patients. This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) on QoL in these patients. Methods: This is an experimental study with randomized clinical trial design which was conducted on 46 SLE patients referring Imam Ali Clinic in Shahrekord, southwest Iran within one year. The patients (totally 46 patients in two groups of 23 each) were assigned into one of the experimental and control groups alternately. Both groups underwent routine medical care and the experimental group underwent eight group sessions of MBCT in addition to routine care. The patients were assessed by 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) prior to, after, and six months after intervention. The data were analyzed by analysis of covariance. Results: A significant difference was seen in QoL between MBCT and control groups after the intervention and follow-up (p≤0.05). But, the difference was not significant for physical components of QoL (p≥0.05). Conclusion: MBCT contributed to improved QoL in SLE patients, with a stable effect on psychological components of QoL but unstable effect on physical components.
