Abstract : Inefficient buildings and solid fuel heating worsen smog situations, destroying health and limiting productivity. Smog has become a more visible problem in recent years. It is known that smog air pollution is mainly caused by the combustion of fuels for the purpose of heating in individual heating installations (so-called local heating) in residential buildings. According to European Commission documents, these are the main cause of non-compliance with air quality standards laid down in EU legislation. This paper deals with the issue of buildings in Slovakia heated by individual-local sources that use mainly solid fuel such as wood, coal and biomass. This causes relatively high air pollution, causing premature death and other complicated health problems. The transition to environmentally cleaner fuels, without systematic state support appears to be quite complicated and unrealistic, especially because solid fuels are the most affordable.
