Antibacterial Activities Derived from Borrasus Flabellifer L. Male Flower Extracts

Abstract : Male flower of Borassus flabellifer L. (Arecaceae) has been used in traditional medicine to cure several diseases. Aims of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activities of young and mature B. flabellifer L. male flowers, which were extracted with ethanol or water, by using agar well diffusion method. All extracts were tested against human pathogenic bacteria which were Gram positive bacterium i.e., Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram negative bacteria i.e., Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis. Ethanolic extracts of young and mature flowers of B. flabellifer L. (150 mg/well) inhibited the growth of S. aureus and E. faecalis which were less than that of water extracts. However, all extracts of B. flabellifer L. male flowers could not inhibit the growth of E. coli. Then, the phytochemical compounds in all extracts were further analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) method. Some bioactive compounds such as 9,12-octadecadienoic acid, methyl ester; 11-octadecenoic acid, methyl ester; and eicosane were found only in ethanolic extracts but not in water extracts. In the other hand, some bioactive compounds, such as propanoic acid, 2-[(trimethylsilyl)oxy]-, trimethylsilyl ester; and Silanol, trimethyl-, phosphate (3:1) were found only in water extracts. According to antibacterial activities, in which only water extracts could inhibit S. aureus and E. faecalis, this might be the results of presenting of those bioactive compounds which specifically found in water extracts but not ethanolic one. From this study, it was clearly revealed that the male flower of B. flabellifer L. is a potential source of bioactive compounds against S. aureus and E. faecalis. Therefore, the further treatment of infectious diseases causing by S. aureus and E. faecalis will be able to recover using B. flabellifer L. male flower.
