Abstract : Zinc modified (Zn/(Zn+Ca) = 0, 0.03, 0.13) calcium phosphate fine powders were synthesized by biomimetic approach and subsequent high-temperature treatment. Bi-phase mixture of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and hydroxyapatite (HA) was prepared at non modified sample and monophase Zn-β-TCP at Zn modified samples. The in vitro biological behavior of the prepared powders was studied using human Lep-3 and bovine MDBK cells. The effect of the materials on cell viability and proliferation was evaluated by three methods with different molecular / cellular targets and mechanisms of action - MTT test, neutral red uptake assay and crystal violet staining. The results obtained revealed high viability of both Lep-3 and MDBK cells cultured for 72h and 96h in the presence of the materials examined applied as 100% material-modified cell culture medium in all three cases. The dilution of material-modified cell culture medium with nonmodified culture medium leads to increasing of cell viability.
