Abstract : This paper addresses one of the greatest challenges in sonochemistry that has impaired scaling up ultrasonic
processes, which is the lack of models capable of predicting the pressure distribution in sono-reactors. In this work, a
recently proposed nonlinear Helmholtz equation, which was strictly demonstrated under the assumption of periodicity of
volume fluctuations, was used to predict sound attenuation at low and high pressure amplitudes. The model predicted
accurately the sound attenuation at low pressure amplitudes while it also represented the many fold increase on attenuation
observed under caviation conditions.
