Abstract : In the present study, biofilm formation and impact of bacteria inoculum added into the microbial fuel cell (MFC)
were investigated. MFC was operated in a dual chamber configuration. The anode chamber contains mixed of palm oil mill
effluent (POME) and inoculum under anaerobic conditions. Variations of inoculum derived from POME and pure culture of
Pseudomonas sp grown in liquid medium. The cathode chamber contains solution of KMnO4 and buffer phosphate under
aerobic conditions. The electrode is a non-catalyst graphite sheet and a proton exchange membrane which is Nafion 212.The
results show that the additional of POME inoculum generates higher Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) value and the greatest power
density. Maximum OCV, power density and current density are 909 mV, 706.25 mW/m2 and 1408.29 mA/m2, respectively.
Electrochemical Impendance Spectrosopy (EIS) was done to monitor resistance formed in the MFC. The Scanning Electron
Microscopy (SEM) test results show that the biofilm is formed on the anode surface. This research demonstrated that the use of
mixed culture bacteria is very crucial on the biofilm formation and improves MFC performances.
