Comparison of Cleanroom Performance in Hospital Culture and Vascular Interventional Radiology Laboratories

This paper presents a systematic approach for evaluating cleanroom performance of two laboratories that belong to a private hospital in Malaysia, namely, a culture and vascular interventional radiology (VIR). Five operating parameters were measured at rest condition as described in the ISO 14644-1 standard which are air temperature, relative humidity, particles concentration of 0.5 μm and 5.0 μm in diameters, airflow velocity, and differential pressure between each lab and the adjacent zones. Both labs are classified as ISO Class 8 cleanroom which are equipped with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters. A TSI 9510-02 airborne particle counter was used to measure the concentrations of particles 0.5 μm and 5.0 μm. A Testo 625 thermo-hygrometer was used to measure the air temperature and relative humidity, while an Alnor EBT 731 manometer was used to measure the airflow velocity and differential pressure between each lab and the neighbouring zones. The airflow velocity was used to determine the room air change rate (ACH). The concentrations of particles 0.5 μm, 5.0 μm, airflow velocity, ACH, air temperature, relative humidity and differential pressure in the culture laboratory are approximately 204,329 particles/m3, 2,959 particles/m3, 0.39 m/s, 40/hr, 21.4ºC, 54.1 % and >1.20 Pa respectively. While, in the VIR laboratory, the corresponding values are 927,366 particles/m3, 1,374 particles/m3, 0.43 m/s, 16/hr, 20.5ºC, 63.3 % and >1.06 Pa, respectively.
