Nanotechnology for the Progress of Lithium-Ion Batteries: Evidence from Patent Data
Lithium-ion batteries have been touted as the most promising energy storage devices for electric vehicles.
However, they still do not meet the standards required to be used in electric vehicles. Studies show that advances in
nanotechnology and material science hold the key to major breakthroughs in the improvement of lithium-ion batteries. The
purpose of this study is to analyze the factors and actors shaping the development direction of nanotechnology-enhanced
lithium-ion batteries. Patent analysis was employed as the research methodology to address the research questions. The
results show an increase in patenting activity in recent decades. The study provides valuable information to stakeholders
involved in making technology management decisions related to lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles.
